Welcome Miss Lindsay!

Welcome Miss J. Lindsay Brown, joining our dance faculty to teach Tuesday classes Stage Acting and Jazz/Hip-Hop! We hope you enjoy learning a little about Miss Lindsay in her bio below. If you're a teen dancer, you're encouraged to attend her workshop tomorrow (details at bottom).

Instructor Bio for Miss Lindsay:

J. Lindsay Brown grew up in Maryland, where she began formal composition training at age 12. She received her B.A in dance (cum laude) from Scripps College in California in 2010. While in California, Lindsay substituted at the Scripps Dance Department, received college funding to attend ADF, ACDF, and had her thesis work presented at the Scripps Inaugurational Gala and at the 2010 Capstone Day. After graduation, she taught composition and improvisation to children of all ages in both California and in the Washington DC area. In 2013, she completed her MFA at the University of Michigan, where she trained with Judy Rice, Bill De Young, and Peter Sparling, and focused on choreography and dance education. While in Michigan, Lindsay taught composition and improvisation workshops at the University of Michigan, ACDF, and at various other dance festivals. In 2012, she received funding from the University of Michigan to research fairytales for her graduate thesis work, Many Upon a Time. This research and subsequent year of rehearsal culminated in a 35 minute work titled Many Upon a Time, which was performed in the round at Betty Pease Studio Theater in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This work was later restaged in August 2013 at the Fasseas Whitebox as part of J. Lindsay Brown & Friends Chicago Debut Twice Told: to the Moon and Back. Her choreography ranges from screen dances to formal evening-length works in the round, covering topics such as Guantanamo, classic literature, and space travel. Her company, now Chicago based, has performed in the Elgin Ties Dance Festival, Delve, and will have a full length show in March 2015. Lindsay has performed solo works at Dance Chance and New Room and she is a teaching artist and education with River North Dance Chicago Education and Community Programming, Performing Arts Limited, and Intuit Dance. She also teaches composition/improvisation workshops throughout Chicago and in Oak Park. Lindsay's interests include Laban Analysis, somatics, site-specific dance, cross-disciplinary collaboration, student-centered learning, divergent thinking, social development, and dance history.

"Just do something!" When said in the studio, these words are terrifying. Your body and mind freeze, you hold your breath, and if you do manage to move, you feel awkward. Whether you are creating your own work, in a college dance program, collaborating with another artist, auditioning, or simply dancing in a professional company, odds are that you will need to improvise at some point. It doesn't need to be scary, either. It can be super fun. The art of Improvisation is a necessary skill for any mature dancer, and J. Lindsay Brown of J. Lindsay Brown Dance (http://www.jlindsaybrowndance.com/) can help you discover and sharpen your skills. This workshop will give you the tools to think on your feet, to make quick decisions, to go with the flow, and help you discover your own unique movement language.

The 75-minute workshop will be followed by a 15-minute Q & A session with Lindsay about dancing in college and beyond. This workshop will benefit any high-school aged dancer, whether or not you want to pursue dance as a career or college major.

Cost: $10
